Amelia Ann Stroop Jones died quietly at her home in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, on Sunday, March 17, 2024. She was 88 years old. She was born in Rome, Georgia, on July 30, 1935, to Robert C. Stroop and Elizabeth T. Garrard Stroop.
Amelia was first and foremost a Christian, a mother, and a grandmother. She became a licensed practical nurse and spent her nursing career in the hospitals of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health in Columbia, South Carolina. She volunteered in various ministries of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and with the Red Cross. She often went out of her way to help someone in need. She always had time for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching them by example to love God and each other.
After retirement she moved to Brunswick County, North Carolina, eventually settling in Sunset Beach. She enjoyed her daily walks and was known for walking miles every day and for frequenting Sunset Beach Park, where she met her many friends.
Amelia was preceded in death by her son, retired Lt. Col. Joel Fred Jones.
She is survived by her son, William H. Jones, Jr. (Marianne), of Columbia, South Carolina; daughter Marie Ann Danford (Derek) of Shallotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at 2:00PM in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, Shallotte, NC.
