Carl Edward Hemphill

Carl Edward Hemphill

Carl Edward Hemphill of Ocean Isle Beach passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023.  He was born on December 10, 1929, in New Jersey, the son of Paul and Anna Hemphill.  He was married to Marion Darlington Stiles in Merchantville, NJ on June 14, 1952, and they were together for 68 years.  Marion passed in 2020.  He is survived by his five children, Susan and husband Michael Keener, Dr. Edward and wife Stephanie Hemphill, Janet and husband Ron Ambrose, Leigh Ann and husband Wayne Ritter (deceased) and Thomas (Teak) and wife Harriet Hemphill.  He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Jay, Carl, Ellen, Anna, Marc, Karla, Joe, Taylor, and Jackson.  Additionally, Carl had 15 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Ethan (deceased), Jeremy, Madison, Kaitlyn, Bradley, Daniel, Will, Ellis, Carlisle, Elizabeth, Daniel, Andrew, Millie, and Maeve.  Carl also had two sisters, Betty Kessler (deceased) of Pennsylvania and Judy Strong of Pennsylvania.

Carl was raised in Haddonfield, NJ, attended Bucknell University, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and then took a detour into the military, first with the Coast Guard for two years and then with the Army in military intelligence for several years.  He ended up graduating from Rutgers State University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Carl worked as an Industrial Engineer for Kimball Glass, Owens Illinois, and Union Carbide for many years following graduation.  He was transferred every few years until he and Marion got tired of moving with five kids.  He ended his career as a plant manager for Elkem Metals in Ashtabula, Ohio.

Once Carl and Marion retired, they chose to move to the beach.  They built a house in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina in 1990.  Carl was very active in retirement—playing golf, tennis into his 80’s, and fishing.  He and Marion travelled the globe, mainly on cruises, and included family members on their many voyages.  Carl was a starter at the old Ocean Isle Beach Golf Course and worked at The Masters for several years in Augusta, GA.  Both he and Marion were active at St. Luke Lutheran Church of Ocean Isle Beach for many years.

The family would like to thank both Arbor Landing and Universal Healthcare of Brunswick for their loving and caring staff over the last year.  Hospice was also very helpful to Carl in his final days.  Services and burial will be private.  Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity or to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 5869 Ocean Hwy West, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
