Claire Thatcher Evans

Claire Thatcher Evans, 94, of Ash entered into her eternal rest , Tuesday August 10, 2021 at her residence.

She was born on August 28, 1926, in Washington, DC; a daughter of the late Eugene and Clyde Snipes Thatcher. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Cleyon Evans and sister, Vera Buckner.

Mrs. Evans retired in 1980 as librarian after 33 years with Brunswick County Schools. She was a graduate from the Woman’s College of UNC in 1946. She taught many courses and held different positions in Brunswick and Columbus Co. Schools. These included teaching home economics, numerous business courses, English, Health, and Math. She taught at Old Dock and Waccamaw School where she was highly respected.

After retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling for 23 years on their motor home. She recognized the fact that she had lived a blessed life.  

She was a charter member of the Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, which honors educators. She also enjoyed her time with the Waccamaw Senior Citizens Group and Brunswick County Retired Educators.

Mrs. Claire was a faithful member of Soldier Bay Baptist Church and the WMU. Through the years she had held many positions at Soldier Bay. She cherished the fact that hers was the first wedding held at Soldier Bay June 21, 1947.

Surviving are her sons, Don Evans, and wife Judy, of Ash; Steve Evans, and wife Anna, of Nags Head; and Kim Evans, and wife Bonnie, of Wake Forest; 6 grandchildren, Scott Evans (Sharon), Natalie Evans, Blair Whitfield (Drew), Dale Evans, Emma Evans and Lewis Evans. 2 great grandchildren, Courtney Lewis (Brad), Christian Evans (Corrie); 3 great great grand daughters Mimi, Ava, and Harper Lewis. Sister-in-law, Avis Williams, Brother-in- law, John A. Williams and several nephews and nieces.   Her Soldier Bay Church Family who she loved dearly. Special caregivers Cathy McKeinze and Cathy Spivey.

Celebration of Life will be at 2pm on Friday, August 13, 2021 in the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Smith and Rev. Jason L. Benton officiating. Entombment will follow in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Active pallbearers are Scott Evans, Christian Evans, Lewis Evans, Brad Lewis, John Evans, and Dean Williams.

Donations may be made in her memory to Soldier Bay Baptist Church Building Fund PO Box 10 Ash, NC 28420 or to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank everyone who brightened up her days. She was so appreciative of every act of kindness. Her parting words were always, ”Thank You”. In her honor please show gratitude to someone today and enjoy a piece of Dove dark chocolate which she did daily.
