Clarence David Brown

David Brown, age 83, formerly from Cabin Creek, WV passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at the hospice center in Bolivia, NC after a short bout with metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Dave graduated from Charleston Catholic H.S. in 1959. He attended the University of Dayton in Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in June, 1963. Also in June of that year he married Rebecca (Becky) Slater also from Charleston, WV.

In September 1963 he attended Hermann Hospital School for Physical Therapy in Houston, TX, and graduated in September 1964. He entered the Army in December 1964 and his first assignment as a 2LT was at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, as a Physical Therapist. Also in that year Terri, his daughter was born and Dan was born in 1965. In 1968 he had orders for Sandia Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico as Chief of Physical Therapy Department. While stationed there he received his Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico in Public Health.

In 1981 he graduated from Command and General Staff College. In 1992 he retired from the Army while stationed again at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Chief of Physical Therapy Dept. He spent 27 years 9 months as an Army officer.

In his spare time he volunteered with youth groups and coached both kids, (Theresa), Terri and (Daniel), Dan, in baseball, softball, basketball, and football. He loved doing that and also led them to undefeated seasons on several occasions.

In 1992, he retired from military service and he and Becky retired to beautiful Sunset Beach. There he finally had time to play some golf, travel and enjoy the surrounding area, but not for long.

He and Becky decided to join the American Red Cross Cape Fear Disaster Team. He served as the Director of the Brunswick County Red Cross Disaster Team for 10 years as a volunteer and at that time guided us through 18 major storms and hurricanes.  He also was influential on volunteering the team to go out on local fire calls to meet with families who had lost everything, and offer Red Cross assistance.

In the later years of his life he enjoyed the fellowship of the IO (Italian Open) golf group. Here he earned the nickname “X-Factor”. He considered these guys his brothers and hardly ever missed a Wednesday playing golf. He also enjoyed cooking, especially his barbequed spare ribs and his famous spaghetti.

He loved to read and spent many hours on the porch enjoying the cool breezes and tranquility.  He loved to talk all sports, his favorites being football, golf, basketball and was an avid Redskin fan.

Dave is survived by his wife Becky of 61 years, his daughter Theresa Laird, son Daniel Brown, his grandchildren, Kristen Alexander, Bradley Brown, Amber Laird, Slater Laird and Isabella Brown. He had 4 great grandchildren.
