Clinton Scott Briggs

Clinton Scott Briggs, born in Dayton, OH on March 7, 1938 to parents Stanley Briggs and Dallas Snodgrass Briggs, passed away on Tuesday, August 9th in the arms of the love of his life Debra Holt Briggs.

Chemist…Engineer…Salesman…Craftsman…Horse Whisperer…Huntsman…Traveler…Husband…Father…Grandfather…Great-Grandfather…the list of his passions is long and deep…just like the impact he left on those whose lives he impacted throughout the years.

Following his high school days in Flemingsburg, KY, Clint attended the University of Kentucky, and later transferred to American University in Washington, D.C., obtaining a degree in Chemistry. Don’t be fooled—each year he enthusiastically cheered for his beloved Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA basketball championships.

Clint began his 37-year professional career with Dupont in 1962. Working out of Wilmington, Richmond, Atlanta, and Charlotte offices. Clint spent the majority of his years with Dupont in Sales and Technical Support. As a young parent raising three girls in the red clay of Georgia, he always took time to support and cheer his daughters in swim meets, 4th of July parades, school plays, and even participated alongside them at the local community theater by taking the lead role in “The King and I”. His “all-things-girl” parenthood quickly transitioned to “all-things-horses” as each of his daughters found a new passion—from showing competitively in equestrian events, to fox hunting, to barrel racing. With a growing number of horses, Clint moved the family to a horse farm in Brooks, Ga, built a tremendous barn that was larger than the family home, and finally started riding himself with Tri County Hounds in Spalding, GA where “Dallas” and “Bama” carried him successfully on many hunts. In 1983, Clint moved to a horse farm in Greensboro, NC, marrying Debra in 1986. He remained a long-time member of the Sedgefield Hunt where he continued to enjoy his passion for riding and caring for his horses. Again, don’t be fooled-all three of his daughters laugh still today about his routine falls while fox hunting, but the aches and pains never dulled his enthusiasm.

Taking after his father, Clint also was a very talented and meticulous woodworker who designed most of his projects and was always available to friends and family to provide that craftsman’s touch. Nothing displays his passion and expertise more than his final home in Sunset Beach, NC. He designed and supervised every facet of construction, and on most days, was seen alongside the construction team offering a helping hand and what he considered a lost art: “sweat equity”.

Clint also loved traveling, planning and taking two coast-to-coast trips in his Roadtrek RV, ticking off “bucket list” items one at a time with his wife and three adored dogs—exploring as far north as Canada’s Nova Scotia province and as far south to Key West, FL.

While he may have suffered with serious and debilitating health issues the past few years, his love, passion, and mental acuity never ceased. We all witnessed firsthand the smiles and darting eyes as he watched his grandchildren and great-grandchildren including him in their activities. As each of his four grandsons will attest: “he was a man’s man”. He will be missed by all.

Clint was survived by his wife Debra; three daughters, Lillian Williams, Kathy Sims, and Charlotte Chappell; five grandchildren, Kristin Roberts, Eric Sims, Kevin Sims, Alex Williams, and Austin Williams; and three great-grandchildren, Lakelyn Roberts, Ruby Sims, and Beckham Roberts. He is and will always remain an inspiration to us all.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Clint Briggs to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or Brunswick County Humane Society.
