Daniel Volk of Supply, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born on July 11, 1937, in Rugby, North Dakota, to William and Elizabeth Volk, he was one of eleven siblings. Growing up in a large family taught him early that he would need to pave—and pay—his own way through college, which he did by working numerous jobs. His determination led him to Grand Forks, where he attended the University of North Dakota. It was there, at the local drive?through restaurant Kegs, that he met the love of his life, Nonna Jane Etzel. They married on October 10, 1959.

Dan began his career in engineering and management with Western Electric in Waltham, Massachusetts. His work later took him to C&P Telephone Company in Colonial Heights, Virginia, and eventually to Vienna, Virginia, where he and Nonna raised their five children.

Community involvement was constant throughout Dan’s life. He served as President of the Vienna Aquatic Club, Commissioner of VYI Basketball, and an active member of the Oakton High School Booster Club. He poured his energy into youth sports—timing Saturday morning swim meets, coaching football, basketball, and Little League baseball. Mentoring young people brought him great joy, and he took pride in helping shape their growth both on and off the field.

As his children grew older and began leaving home, Dan discovered a new passion: golf. He joined Cedar Crest Country Club, and the game quickly became a central part of his life. After retiring in 1995, he and Nonna moved to the Lockwood Folly Golf Course Community in Supply, North Carolina, where his leadership skills found new purpose as he managed a men’s golf group for many years.

Dan was an enthusiastic fan of both college and professional sports. He followed the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, and Maryland Terrapins with unwavering loyalty, and he cherished the friendships formed through shared sports experiences.

Above all, Dan was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great?grandfather. His love for his family was unwavering and deep, and he will remain forever in their hearts. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nonna Volk; his five children—Karen Throckmorton (Ben), David Volk, Valerie Whittemore, Terri Thompson (Joel), and Brian Volk (Tammy); his six grandchildren—Alyssa, Jennifer, Becca, Jessica, Matthew, and Anna; and six great?grandchildren—Ava, Eric, Damian, Autumn, Cameron, and Lily.

The family will hold a private memorial service when they can all be together to celebrate his exceptional life.
