During his final deployment, Don served as a River Rat with the River Patrol Squadron 5 amidst the Vietnam War. While not on patrol, he dedicated himself to teaching English to the Vietnamese.

After returning home to his wife and loved ones, they settled in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia region and were blessed with three devoted daughters: Denise, Donna, and Darlene. He lived a rich and rewarding life, committing 30 years of service to the Department of Defense, ultimately retiring as Chief, Administrative Services and Program Supervisor. His interests included aviation, boating and travel. He shared his passion for flying as a pilot and flight instructor. He volunteered with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, patrolling the Potomac River and teaching boat safety skills in his free time.

In 2012, Don and Diana retired to Calabash, NC, where he enjoyed plenty of time at the beach, vacationing and visiting with family and friends.

Don possessed a great joy for life, he embodied wisdom, kindness, gentleness and love. He showed great affection to those around him including his adored pets. He was loved by all that knew him and never met a stranger.
