Obituary
Donham Douglas “Don” Kauffman, Sr. died Saturday, October 26, 2024, at McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River, SC.
Don was born on May 2, 1944, in Conway, SC to John Philip and Addie Scurry Kauffman.
Don was a family man enjoying research into his ancestry. He was also a diehard South Carolina Gamecock fan. He spent his career as an accountant and a mechanical engineer with Westvaco Paper Mill, in Charleston, SC. During his career, he began the industrial engineering program and innovated the use of nondestructive testing for paper mills. He served Westvaco 35 years and retired in 1999.
Upon his retirement, he began building houses on Ocean Isle Beach, NC. He built 4 houses on the beach, loved the building process and OIB. He was active in the OIB Planning Board, Board of Adjustments, Property Owners’ Assoc. and drove the ATV for the Sea Turtle Patrol.
He also designed the OIB shrub planting at the entrance to Ocean Isle Beach and formed the OIB Garden Club. He parked cars on the beach for both the Friday Concert and the Shallotte Presbyterian Beach Service. He was active in his church, Shallotte Presbyterian, serving in various roles and as an Elder. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Don is survived by his wife of 58 years: Carol Ann Amyx Kauffman; daughter: Debra Alewine (Joe) of N. Charleston, SC; son: Don Kauffman, Jr. (Jennifer) of Greer, SC; grandchildren: Brittany, Tristin, Grace, James, Will, and great grandchildren: Arianna, Elora, and Reggie.
A Memorial Service will be held at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 M. H. Rourk Drive Shallotte, NC 28470 on Saturday, November 2nd at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Shallotte Presbyterian Audio Visual Committee so the ministry he loved can continue and grow.
