Surviving are also numerous nieces and nephews: Sonya Burchell, Jeramie Hughes, Andy Smith, Ashley Hughes, Alan Tyree, Denise Sommersett, Stephanie Burgess, Ashley Varnum, Alan Thorsen, and Paula Seavey.
Dwight was born in Southport, NC on August 25, 1952 to the late Dexter Woodring Hughes, Sr. and Mary Wilda Holden Hughes. Dwight was self-employed for many years (Dwight Hughes Marine Construction) and later worked as a rigger for Progress Energy until 2010. Through his work he made many life-long friends.

He rescued and adopted many furbabies and loved each one, with the most recent being Boots, who cuddled with him every night in his recliner.
