Edith Brown Dail

Edith Brown Dail, 102, went peacefully to be with the Lord on October 2, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-two years John J. Dail, her parents The Reverend Arthur Lewis Brown and Eva Williams Brown, and her brother Arthur L. Brown, Jr. and her sisters Lu McKeithen and Martha Willis.

Surviving are her children, Sandra Dail Thomas of Shallotte, NC and John A. Dail (Dotty) of Beaufort, SC; her grandchildren, Edward R. Thomas IV (Natasha)of Myrtle Beach, SC, Elizabeth T. Lewis (T.J.) of Shallotte, Hope E. Thomas of Asheville, NC, John J. Dail II (Kara) of Charlotte, NC, Parker G. Dail (Brandy) of Dallas, TX, and Scott F. Dail (Katie)of Fort Mill, SC; her great grandchildren, Annalyse Thomas, Edward R. Thomas V, John J. Thomas, Eli Dail, John Foster Dail, Knox Dail, Hadleigh Dail, Eason Dail, Preston Durocher, Katya Durocher, Taylor Lewis and Thad Lewis, IV, and by her siblings, Myrtle Watson, Harvey Brown, and Bob Brown.

Edith was born in Portsmouth, VA on October 6, 1915 and graduated from Benson High School at the age of 15 before moving to Smithfield, NC where she met and later married John J. Dail. She was a devoted and faithful wife and a devoted mother, and a devoted grandmother. She was an active and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Smithfield where she served as a deacon in the 1940s. She was a member of Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her faith and family were her primary focus. She was an accomplished pianist and organist who played for many funerals, weddings, and church services. Needlepoint was one of her passions and she shared many pieces with family and friends.
Edith was a true mathematician and loved being bookkeeper for her husband’s business, in the office of Johnston County Hams well into her eighties, and seasonally in various tobacco warehouse offices. She was to the end a true refined Southern Lady who always dressed to the hilt.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at First Baptist Church of Smithfield on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends one hour preceding the service at 10:00 AM.

Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Brunswick House, Bolivia, NC, or First Baptist Church of Smithfield, NC.
