Obituary
Elaine Austin Newell, 82, of Sunset Beach died January 19, 2023. She was born in Union County, North Carolina on April 18, 1940, a daughter of Baxter Lee Austin and Hessie Hill Austin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Newell.
She was the sole survivor of eight siblings.
She retired from Bell South / AT&T after 30 years as an engineer. Elaine was a community servant, an animal lover, and a dedicated volunteer. She was a founder of the Boston Terrier Rescue of North Carolina. In addition, she was a Union County Master Gardener, a member of the Union County Literacy Council, and a member of Telephone Pioneers of America.
Surviving are her son, Kenny Newell (Susan) of Sunset Beach; granddaughter, Bailey McGalliard (Evan) of Roebuck, SC; and great grandchildren, Sage and Tilly McGalliard.
Services will be at a later date.
