Obituary
In Loving Memory of Freeda Avanelle Stockman Long
Freeda Avanelle Stockman Long, 92, a long-time resident of Shallotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2026. She leaves a lasting legacy rooted in her family and community. Freeda was born September 21, 1934, to parents James Andrew “Anga” Stockman and Mary Eflyn Koon of Newberry, South Carolina.
Freeda was preceded in death by her cherished son, Gerald Wayne Long, in 2017, and her beloved husband, Gerald Lee Long, in 2019.
She is survived by her daughter, Renee Melvin of Goldsboro, and daughter-in-law, Tanya Long of Raleigh. Also left to cherish Freeda's memory are her five grandchildren: Zac (Jessica) of Raleigh, Ben (Brooklyne) of Wrightsville Beach, Caleb of Atlanta, Jarred (Julia) of Lowell, and Forrest (Seth) of Durham, and her eight great-grandchildren.
Raised in Newberry, Freeda met her husband, Gerald, before they moved to Shallotte in 1970. In their 63 years of marriage, she stood proudly as his partner in life and business, helping operate independent grocery stores and supporting him in his two terms as Mayor of Shallotte. Freeda cared deeply for the community she called home.
Above all, Freeda’s greatest joy was her family. Known affectionately as "Sweet Thing," she will be warmly remembered for her strong independent streak and witty sense of humor.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, at Camp United Methodist Church, 4807 Main St., Shallotte. A celebration of life will follow with Reverend Clay Parker officiating. Entombment will take place afterward at Brunswick Funeral Service, 5229 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte.
Special thanks to family friends Sheree and Cecil Rhodes, trusted caregiver Deborah Sherman of Carolina Neighbors, and the compassionate care teams at Well Care Home Health and Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Nurture Ministries of Camp United Methodist Church or a local charity of your choice.
