Gary Edward King

Gary Edward King

Gary Edward King passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016 at his home in St. James, North Carolina, with his family at his bedside. Born in Newburgh, NY on May 20, 1947 to Dorothy (Schaefer) and Edward King. He grew up in Wood-Ridge, New Jersey where he graduated high school in 1965.

In 1969 he graduated from Rutgers University with his Bachelors of Arts in Economics. He continued his studies at Rutgers where he earned his Masters of Arts in Industrial Relations and completed his Economics and Organizational Behavior Ph.D. coursework at Temple University. Gary devoted himself to public service over the span of his nearly 40-year career, most notably serving as the president of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA) from 1992 to his retirement in 2008. After retirement, he continued to support public service organizations through his own consulting firm, King Management Partners.

It is difficult to adequately capture Gary’s zealous commitment to the advancement of public policy. He served on a bevy of committees and received numerous awards for his efforts including the “Martin Luther King, Jr. 2000 Annual Statewide Leadership Award” and the “National Council of Governors’ Policy Advisors: Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Rough Rider Award.” Gary’s legacy continues through the housing initiative programs he brought to Connecticut. To this day, his former colleagues discuss his innovative spirit and how it truly transformed CHFA.

Gary also volunteered his time outside the office as a member of many boards and advisory committees. He was most proud to serve as Vice Chairman of the Connecticut Sports Foundation Against Cancer, championing the organization’s mission to financially support Connecticut cancer patients and their families and fund cancer research.

He will best be remembered by his family as loving, supportive, and kind. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Kathleen Seyebe King; his son Steven King and daughter-in-law Sarah Hazel; his son Jeffrey King; his mother-in-law Evelyn Schwoebel Seyebe; his sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Rich Mushock and his nephew and niece; and his brother and sister-in-law Greg and Gail King and his three nieces.

Cremation took place at the Brunswick Funeral Service in Southport, North Carolina. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.brunswickfuneralservice.com.

Memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s name to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (giving.mskcc.org) or the Connecticut Sports Foundation Against Cancer (www.sportsfoundation.org).
