George John Fruhbeis

Born in the Bronx, New York to German immigrants, Mr. George John Fruhbeis, 84, died on October 9, 2018 surrounded by his wife and two children at his home in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lois (Sabarese), his son, Michael John Fruhbeis, (Susan) of Ramsey, New Jersey; his daughter, Melissa Anne Cornish, (Christopher) of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; and his brother, Francis Fruhbeis (Nancy) of Cornelius, North Carolina. Dearly referred to as “Pop”, he is also the beloved grandfather of Maxwell Vincent and Miles Theodore Fruhbeis, and William Christopher, Hope Catherine, and Julia Anne Cornish.

Before retiring from teaching at Roy W. Brown Middle School in Bergenfield, New Jersey while raising his family in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, George taught U.S. history and English and coached basketball for Dumont High School and St. Michael’s College in Hastings on the Hudson, New York. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Sylvester and Margaret Fruhbeis and his brother, Freddy Fruhbeis. George received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Paterson State College (Paterson, NJ, now William Paterson University) and his Master of Arts in Education from Montclair State University (then College) (Montclair, NJ). While living in Fair Lawn, he and his family enjoyed summers down the Shore in Lavallette, New Jersey and relocated to Juno Beach, Florida after he retired from teaching in 2000. Then in 2018, he and Lois decided to call Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina their new home.

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, October 12, 2018 at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church (5101 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, NC). Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 and 9:00-11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home at 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, NJ. A burial will follow the morning visitation on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ.

The family wishes to bestow their sincerest gratitude to a group of caregivers who provided their skills, services, and compassion to caring for George at the end of his life – Ms. Nathalie Parks, Mr. Tyronne Gibson, Ms. Tricia Beck, Ms. Tammy Parnell, Ms. Angela Hughes, and Ms. Angela Boyd.
