George Ransom Reynolds

George Ransom Reynolds

George Ransom (Skip) Reynolds previously of Fairfax, VA and most recently of Sunset Beach, NC died on August 26, 2016. He and Laura Jane Smith lived 70 years of blissful but exciting years of marriage.

A 1949 graduate of MIT in Electrical Engineering and a Varsity Letter in LaCrosse, he served 28 years in US Navy with rank of Commander. Commander Reynolds was a seaplane pilot during the 1950s and 1960s, disappeared on a classified mission during the Cuban Missile Crisis, flew around the world with a very special key in the mid-sixties to activate what eventually became the Top SIPRNET network at various military bases, his final assignment in 1968 was to write the manual for officers to inform families of the death in the line of service of their son/daughter. He spent his later years enjoying retirement with his family, building additions to his house, using his MIT degree as a licensed electrician, and as a coach of the first Virginia Women's Softball team towing a tournament game in the Washington DC League. With a mind still sharp after 91 years, he spent his last night completing his local newspaper crossword puzzle in 20 minutes and then watching Jeopardy for the last time, probably knowing all the answers.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Jane Reynolds and their 4 children, Sandra Jane Reynolds and friend Maria Alvarez of Sunset Beach, NC, George Ransom (Ranny) Reynolds, Jr. and wife, Ulrike of Lake Monticello, VA, David Michael Reynolds and wife, Rhonda of Bemidji, MN and Laura Kathleen Reynolds of Knightdale, NC; four grandchildren, Erin Reynolds Hodson, RN, Dr. Austin Windsor Reynolds, Dr. Christopher Ransom Reynolds and Jessica Ann Cook; four great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Joe Pitts Smith of Richmond, VA.; sister-in-law, Linda Williams Smith; three nieces, Dr. Lucia Morey, Jessica Smith Bright and Dr. Mary Vaughn DeSoto.
