George Winston Dowdy, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 28, 2021.

Born March 5, 1933 in Concord, NC.  He lived also in Charlotte, Mooresville and Huntersville, NC over the course of several years.    In 2006 he and his wife moved to Brick Landing Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, where they had spent summers for many years.

He graduated from McCallie Military School and attended the University of North Carolina.  He later joined his father at the Charlotte Belk Department store where he worked for several years.  In 1985 he and Irene designed and opened a billiard room and restaurant in Charlotte called Mother’s Billiard Parlor and Grille, an upscale billiard room where they held major billiard events for several years and enjoyed a thriving community of male and female players, many of whom still comment on their enjoyment of playing there and knowing him.  He was always a gentleman as many of his associates and friends have commented.  He was also a consummate storyteller and had many stories to tell, even during his last days in the hospital when the nurses would have time to listen while attending to him.  His daughter credits him with her success in that he was a staunch supporter of women long before it was fashionable, always telling her she could do anything a boy could do.

He was an avid golfer, having played in major tournaments in the Charlotte area and was a member of the Charlotte Country Club. He was a long-time member of the Brick Landing Men’s Sports Club.   He loved the game and would give tips to anyone who asked. He taught his son, daughter and wife how to play.  He played for many years in retirement and enjoyed his love of playing bridge and poker as well.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Irene Tolvay Dowdy, son George Winston Dowdy, III, daughter, Vicki Dowdy McKendrick Hardee and her husband, Gregg.  stepson, Joseph Steven Vasil and wife, Candy.  In the blended family his survivors include grandsons, Ryan McKendrick and wife, Melinda, Steven Vasil, Cody Roberts and granddaughters, Sydney Kay Dowdy, Destiny Marie Dowdy, Taylor Treadway, Rachel Hendricks and husband, Matthew, and Lexie Vasil and great grandchildren, Rowan and Malcolm McKendrick and Jackson Ray Hendricks.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two stepdaughters, Michelle Hurley and Alyse Vasil.
