Hugh Richard McCullough
Obituary
Hugh Richard McCullough of Shallotte died November 30 at Novant Medical Center in Supply after a brief illness. He was 93 years old.
Hugh was born in Saskatchewan on August 17, 1930 to Samual Richard & Frances Clark McCullough. He moved to the U.S. with his mother when he was 9 years old. He later became a naturalized US citizen and, when eligible, joined the US Army. While in the military, he met and married Hamayo Ishida. They had a son, Brian Richard McCullough and a daughter, Katharene Noelle McCullough. She passed away in 1984.
After his 12-year tour in the Service, Hugh enrolled in the Capital Radio Engineering Institute and received a degree in Engineering. Upon completion of his schooling, he spent the next 22 years working on weather satellites for NOAA. After retiring from NOAA, he worked for Planning Research Corporation in McLean VA. Hugh was a Charter member of the Aquia Harbour Lions Club where he served as Secretary, President and Zone Chairman.
It was while living in Aquia Harbour that he married his good friend and neighbor, Sara Burton. In May, 1991 they moved to Shallotte, NC to enjoy their retirement playing golf. He did just that – he played golf with his Brierwood golf buddies until he was 88 yrs old. In addition to golf, he was a dedicated volunteer for the Shallotte Fire Department (back when they had volunteers) and loved every minute of it. Hugh was not known for being particularly fast – until that beeper went off!!
Hugh leaves behind his wife of 39 yrs, Sara, his son, Brian (Vikki), and daughter, Katharene (Michael), 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and burial will be at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, VA in the near future.
