Obituary
James Leo Couvillon, 78, of Bolivia, NC passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026, surrounded by his family.
James was born on May 29, 1948, in Baton Rouge, LA, the son of the late Conrad Couvillon and Lucille Barbier Couvillon. In addition to his parents, he is preceded by his sisters Catherine Hicks and Claire LeBlanc.
James graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and attended Louisiana State University. He enlisted in the United State Army in April 1968 and was discharged September 1973. While serving in the army he served two tours of in Germany. After the military, he was employed by Exxon Chemical and retired from their spinoff company Infineum on September 30, 2006. While working for Infineum besides his regular duties he was an emergency and hazmat responder.
Throughout his life, James had several adventures and accomplishments. He established Boy Scout troop 523 in Colonia, NJ, and served as the scout master for many years. James was a member of the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council and a 4th Degree Knight of Our Lady of La Salette Assembly in Shallotte, NC. He was a member of the Men’s Golf Association at Carolina National Golf Course and a volunteer for community clean up days in Winding River Plantation. James was a loyal SEC fan, especially his beloved LSU Tiger’s sports.
He is survived by his wife Mary Scott Couvillon, of Bolivia, NC; son, James L. Couvillon, of Bolivia, NC; daughter, Michelle Couvillon and husband, Daniel Romeo, of Hampstead, NC; brother, Michael Couvillon, of Austin, TX; brother-in-law, Robert Scott, of Manchester, NJ; grandchildren, Miles and Avery Romeo; along with many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass will be Friday, September 4, 2026, at 10:00am in St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church (5105 Ocean Hwy West, Shallotte, NC 28470). Following the service, inurnment will be in the church columbarium with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in honor of James to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
