Janine B. Sommer
Obituary
JANINE B. SOMMER, age 98, of Ocean Isle Beach, Shallotte, NC, passed away February 7, 2021. Services to be announced at a later date.
Janine was born in Paris, France on October 14th, 1922. As a young adult, Janine moved to the United States in the late 1940s to fulfill her lifelong dream. In Baltimore (MD), she first worked as an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University.
It was in Baltimore that she met and fell in love with her future husband, Wolfram F Sommer. On the side she taught the French language, was very interested in many things such as politics and history. They had no children of their own. She and Wolfram loved to travel including Caribbean cruises and visits to relatives in Europe.
In retirement, they were drawn from Baltimore to climatically warmer North Carolina. They lived in Carolina Shores to enjoy retirement life together. Janine loved to get together with her friends. After her dear husband Wolfram died, Janine lived alone in the home they shared for a few more years. Janine loved to laugh and always kept her sense of humor. For many years she considered her nieces and nephews as her own children and there was a deep bond until the end.
After living alone became more and more difficult due to age, in the beginning of 2018 she moved from Carolina Shores (Calabash) to Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle senior residence.
Earlier this year, Janine became ill with COVID-19. After a short hospital stay, as a result of COVID, her strength left her on February 7th, 2021 at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick in Bolivia.
We will all miss her and always remember the many experiences and wonderful times together. Corinna, Birgit, Johannes and Sven-Ejnar, Gerard, Odette, and all her relatives and friends.
Services to be announced at a later date.
