Joel Wayne Ingold
Obituary
Southport, NC- On Thursday, February 4, 2021, Joel Wayne Ingold passed away at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Bolivia, NC. He was born on January 31, 1938 in Montgomery County, NC. He was the son of the late Pressley Rankin (P.R.) Ingold and Clara Poe Ingold.
Wayne served 22 years in the United States Navy and retired in 1978 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. After his retirement, he and his wife Betty relocated to Polkton, NC where they lived until they moved to Oak Island/Southport area in 2013. While he lived in Polkton, he worked for North Carolina Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance for 22 years and retired in 2000 as a Bridge Maintenance Supervisor.
Until his health began to fail, Wayne was an avid golfer and would routinely play a round of golf three to four times a week. Even when he was not on the golf course, he would visit Twin Valley Country Club daily just to visit. Once he moved to Oak Island, he was either playing golf or hanging out at Duffer’s nearly every day. Once he could no longer play golf, he felt a day away from Duffer’s was a day wasted. He had a regular bar stool that he would sit at each day and make sure he was where he could ask every person that came in, “how ya playing”.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Betty Alber Ingold, of the home, and their children, Jennifer Norris, husband Matthew Norris, and their children Emma Horne, Chris Norris, and Bryan Norris of Mt. Gilead, NC; Joel Ingold, Jr., wife Diane, and child Joel Ingold III, of Pinebluff, NC; John Ingold, wife Anita, and their children Tiffany Ingold, and Nick Ingold of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Bob) Ingold, wife Shirley, and their children Aaron Freeman and Crystal Cockman of High Point, NC. Great grandchildren Landon and Linley. He is also survived by a very special daughter in law Harriett Leary, and many very special friends, especially Billy Seguin.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their care during his short stay in their facility. They would also like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Domenic Palagruto and staff for their excellent care and compassion for the past 5+ years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422.
