John Michael Czap

On Tuesday evening, October 12, 2021 John M. Czap, husband and father of three children and four great grandchildren passed away at the age of 93.

John was a member of the Calabash Covenant Presbyterian Church since 1992. He served in the choir until 2020 and for many years was a member of the grounds keeping team. He mowed the lawn each Saturday and even helped plant most of the shrubs you see on the grounds today. He proudly served for 20 years each Christmas in the North Myrtle Beach All Cities Choir and many July 4th concerts. He proudly sang at many community patriotic celebrations, and other ceremonies.

John was born in Staten Island, New York and graduated from Tottenville High School. Growing up during the depression, he was one of thirteen children. He was a telephone installer all his life in Manhattan, NY and Edison, New Jersey. And retired from AT&T. He loved and cherished his country and was a part of the greatest generation. A proud veteran, John served in the U.S. Coast Guard and patrolled the Atlantic during the last months of World War II. He loved this country.

John treasured working in his yard and could be found riding his tractor mower regularly. He also enjoyed mowing his neighbors grass too. John cared about his neighbors and “kept an eye on” their homes. John enjoyed golf when he retired here. He loved the ocean and for a time had a boat here in the area and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

John married Roberta Lorraine Wilson in 1952 at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Tottenville, Staten Island, NY. Roberta passed in 2010. They raised three children. John is survived by daughters Lorraine Czap and Patricia Stewart, and his son Andrew Thomas “Tom” Czap. He is also survived by Tom’s four grandchildren, Justin Czap, Jessica Caldwell, Alyssa Schollenberger, and Travis Czap, and four great grandchildren, Bella Czap, Otto Czap, Eve Czap, and Luke Caldwell.

A memorial service will be held at the Calabash Covenant Presbyterian church Saturday, November 13th at 11:00 a.m. Masks and self distancing within the church sanctuary is required. The family invites you to join them for the Committal of John’s ashes at the church columbarium, concluding with the playing of “Taps” by the American Legion.
