John W. Elliott, 89, of Calabash Dr, Carolina Shores, NC, died March 7th, 2017 at SECU Hospice Care in Bolivia.
John was born October 17, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pa, the son of the late Marie O’Toole Elliott and John Elliott. He was the husband of Mary Patricia (Lacey) Elliott, for 56 years, before she preceded him in death.
John was a graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pa, as well as LaSalle College with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Major in Accounting. John also served in the US Army, in active duty as well as served in the US Naval Reserve from 1948 to 1952.
Mr. Elliott began his career working in the Insurance business. He was employed with the Home Indemnity Co. of New York handling Liability and Bond Claims from 1951 to 1958. He was employed with Ohio Casualty Insurance Company and served in various capacities starting in 1958 with settling all lines of Insurance Claims until he retired in 1988 where he was handling all Fidelity and Surety Claims in a management position.
After Mr. Elliott retired in 1988, he was self-employed as a Fidelity and Surety Specialist handling the investigation of specialized Claims for several large insurance carriers, continuing his professional career an additional 12 years.
John (Jack) contributed to a number of areas both for the town of Calabash and the town of Carolina Shores. He was an active member of the Carolina Shores P.O.A. serving on the Board as Vice President and President in 1993 and 1994. He was a member of the Brunswick County Emergency Management Agency for the Town of Calabash, and served as a Commissioner for the town of Calabash. He was the first elected mayor in 1998, for the town of Carolina Shores, where he served for the first 5 years. During his term as mayor he assembled a great town staff, completed construction of the town hall, a storm-water management system and setup a solid financial situation for the town’s growth.
He was a volunteer at Brunswick Hospital for a number of years. As a survivor himself, he was an avid participate in a number of American Cancer Society Fund raisers.
He is survived by his 3 children; Patricia (Keith) Hamilton of West Chester, Ohio, John M. Elliott of Carolina Shores of NC, and Michael (Debra) Elliott of Greenwood, Indiana; 4 grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Sauder, Heather L Hamilton, Tyler Elliott, and Sara (Sam) Kinder; and 8 great-grandchildren, and his dear friend and companion, Winfred Rubio.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 6 to 8pm at Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel Shallotte, North Carolina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at St. Brendan the Navigator Roman Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC.
