Lawrence Dayton Black, Sr.

Lawrence “Larry” Dayton Black, Sr., 83, of Sunset Beach, NC, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born in Huntingdon, PA, on April 24, 1943, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Alberta Black. He was preceded in death by his brother Gene and sister-in-law Helen.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Decker Black; two sons, Dayton Black, Jr. (Donna) and David Black (Dianne); three daughters, Dana Lynn (Mike), Danielle Black (partner Eric), and Dara Paul (Dave); thirteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Mary Ann Seely; sister-in-law Kelly Decker; and multiple nieces and nephews in Texas.

Prior to retirement, Larry served the public for more than 40 years not only as a police officer but as a Magistrate and Chief Magistrate for the Commonwealth of Virginia. His dedication to public service was an important part of his life and legacy.

Larry was affectionately known as “Bear” by his family. He truly enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved politics, football, golf, reading, and most of all his family. After retiring, one of his greatest pleasures was driving his orange golf cart around the neighborhood, handing out treats to the neighborhood dogs. He also enjoyed his daily workouts at the gym and staying active.

Larry had an infectious smile and a gift for making people feel welcome. He never met a stranger; and his warmth, humor, generosity, and love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who took great pride in his family and cherished every opportunity to be together.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pink Palace, located in Sea Trail Plantation, Sunset Beach, NC.

Family and friends are invited to join together to celebrate Larry’s life and the many memories he leaves behind.
