Leo Andrew Jarmusz

Leo Andrew Jarmusz, was a man of remarkable longevity, deep faith in the catholic church, and a youthful spirit.  Leo passed away at his home in Carolina Shores, North Carolina, on March 8, 2026, at the age of 106.  Born on October 21, 1919, in Bloomfield, New Jersey, he lived a life defined by family, service and faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theordore and Catherine Jarmusz, and his three brothers, Theodore Jarmusz, Walter Jarmusz, and his twin, Raymond Jarmusz; as well as his wife of 63 years, Ann Mary Jarmusz of Harrison, New Jersey.  He is survived by the four children they had together: Leo Jarmusz, wife Donna, grandsons Justin and Alex, wife Leila, and great-grandson Jett; Diane Jarmusz; Richard Jarmusz, wife Dawna, grandson Tony, wife Martha; Dorene Neel, husband Jeff, grandsons Reilly, fiancé Emmie, and Spencer, fiancé Angel.

Leo graduated from Bloomfield High School in New Jersey in 1938, where he delighted in playing the drums in several marching bands and received awards for his drumming skills.  He also enjoyed basketball and golf.  After high school, Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He earned the rank of sergeant while serving in the Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Armored Division in Europe during WWII.  Upon returning home, Leo met the love of his life, Ann, at a community dance.  While starting his new life with Ann, he attended Seton Hall University, graduating in the Class of 1952 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.  He started working for the Sun Tube Company, which was later acquired by the American Can Company, where Leo working until he retired in 1981.

Leo started his lifelong love of playing golf at the age of 13 with just two clubs, and continued until the age of 100, with 4 lifetime holes-in-one.  While living in Newtown, Connecticut Leo started downhill skiing at the age of 50, taking many ski trips to Vermont and the Rocky Mountains with his family.  He continued to enjoy music as well as dancing, attending concerts and dances regularly.  Together with Ann, he enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries and making many new friends.  He always valued being part of his community as an active member of various associations including the Elks Lodge in Lodge No. 2679, where he was Officer of the Year 2000-2001, and the VFW post 7288 both of Calabash, North Carolina.  Later in life, Leo’s routine included weekly dining out with a group of friends each Thursday.  He was also fortunate to find a dear friend, Dotty Callahan, with whom he would frequent Patios in Little River for dinner and dancing.

Leo’s life was truly a life well lived.  His youthful spirit and deep faith will be remembered by all who knew him.  His charming smile and spirit will stay in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in remembrance of him. 

A Mass service will be held at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Shallotte, North Carolina at a later date.
