She moved to California in 1971 and worked for the Navy Department in San Diego and San Francisco. She returned to the East Coast in 1981 and married Charlie. She continued her successful career with the Navy and retired in 2002. She and Charlie created a lovely home in northern VA and lived there for 32 years before moving to St. James in 2017.
Linda is survived by her husband Charles M. Wood, son Christopher B. Gilpin, brother William E. Mattingly and wife Rita, brother-in-law Frank Wood and wife Kathy, sister-in-law Ruth Steed and husband Rich, nephews Bill Mattingly and wife Kelly Mattingly, Sean Mattingly and wife Vanessa Mattingly, Andrew Wood and wife Hollyn Wood, nieces Katie Ballard and husband Will Ballard, Tina Ray and husband Tony as well as many grand nephews and nieces. Linda loved playing golf, traveling, and mostly visiting with her many relatives, friends and golfing buddies. She loved returning to northern VA to play at her old golf club and visiting her dear friends in Florida as well. She made many new friends in St. James and always looked forward to socializing with all of them.
Linda had a long, hard fight with esophageal cancer that finally overwhelmed her tremendous effort to stay with us. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either the American Cancer Society or the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, a campus of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel, Bolivia, NC.
