Lubin "Wayne" Smith
Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our daddy Lubin "Wayne" Smith on November 13, 2025, at the age of 80. Wayne spent his last days surrounded by family in the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick after a brief illness.
Wayne was the first-born child to Raymond and Geneva Smith on December 12, 1944. He was born In Roseboro NC and graduated from Roseboro High School in 1963. Wayne became a truck driver like his daddy and provided for his family of three kids driving for Gulf Oil Company. He was based out of Wilmington for a few years but most of his time with them was based out of Selma NC in Johnston County where he raised his family with his life's love Effie "Kay" Smith. He was always drawn to the water and had a lifelong passion for fishing. He was a great cook, especially outdoors and had a love for good food, especially oysters. Wayne had a way with telling stories, his inflections had adults and kids alike listening and watching because his body danced and hands were moving about with each one told. He always had one ready for the occasion, and you never saw him that he didn't have a joke or two. Later in life Wayne returned to Sampson County and made a home with long-time partner Frances Frost and dogs Precious and Booger. In those years he really loved attending family reunions and holiday get-togethers, catching up with his family. Wayne enjoyed different hobbies throughout his life including gun collecting, wood carving, especially belt buckles, going to auctions and of course fishing. He knew the trick and had dedicated time to keeping a sharp edge on his pocketknife. Wayne spent the last couple years of his life living in Fayetteville where he enjoyed spending time making memories with his youngest daughter and her husband. He spent the last few months of his life living with his son where he and his wife cared for him as his health declined.
Wayne was greeted at the gate by loved ones that had gone on before him including his Mama and Daddy Geneva and Raymond Smith, his newborn Sister Audrey Geneva Smith, his favorite brother-in-law Jerry Parrish, his granddaughter Jessica Leighanna Byrd, his granddog Lola, his longtime partner Frances Frost and their dogs Precious and Booger.
He left behind to miss him until we meet again, a son Randy Smith (Erica) Shallotte NC, a daughter TracyAnn Killen (Joe) Morehead City NC, a daughter Mahaley Smith (Joe) Fayetteville NC, six grandchildren Amber Byrd, Melody Maraquin, Melissa McCullough, Daniel Killen, Miranda Smith, Madison Smith, two grand dogs Beau and Luke whom he called Biguns, ten great grandchildren, his favorite sister Sheila Parrish of Roseboro NC, his favorite brother Eddie Smith and Tammy his favorite Sister in law, three nieces, one nephew, twelve great nieces and nephews, and a great lifelong once in a lifetime friend Ernie Melvin.
A graveside service celebrating his life will be held at Beaver Dam Baptist Church 4693 Beaver Dam Church Rd Roseboro, NC 28382 on December 6, 2025, at 1PM with a time of food and fellowship to follow at Shiloh PH Church 2271 Autry Mill Rd Godwin, NC. All are welcome.
