Obituary
Luther Andrew Godbey, Jr., age 90, passed away May 16, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family in Ocean Isle Beach, NC.
Luther was born in Kanawha County, WV on March 13, 1934, to Luther and Vacie Miller Godbey.
Luther served in the US Navy from 1953-1956 on the Destroyer Escort Ulvert M. Moore. He then spent his career with the US Postal Service and, after 37 years, retired having served as Postmaster in Grafton and Parkersburg, WV.
He was an avid Mountaineer supporter, and after retirement, worked with the Governor’s Summer Youth Program and drove for Enterprise and Toyota. He was Master of Ceremonies at the Grafton National Cemetery and at the Mother’s Day Shrine in Grafton, WV. He was also active in the Kawanis Club and at Emmanuel Baptist - Parkersburg and Ocean View Baptist – Ocean Isle Beach.
Luther is survived by his wife of 39 years: Patricia Goff Godbey; sons: Steve Godbey (Cyndi) of Tallahassee, FL; Mark Godbey (Devon) of Huntington, WV; Jon Godbey of Charleston, WV; daughter: Mindy Walker (Larry) of Dunbar, WV; step daughters: Terri Weiford (Mike) of Harrisville, WV; Kelly Haught of Bridgeport, WV; brother: Frank Godbey (Marlene) of Greenville, SC; grandchildren: Amanda Godbey, Andrew and Madison Walker; step grandchildren: Hannah and Austin Weiford and Sydney McDonald; one great grandchild: Livi-Jean Louise Godbey; and several special nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his shadow K-9 companion Harley David Sen.
Luther is preceded in death by his grandson: Dr. Jeff Godbey and sisters: Ruth Moses and Wanda Seward.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 21st at 11:00 am Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, NC.
