Martha G. Murphy

Martha G. Murphy 88, of Sunset Beach, NC, formally of Oxon Hill, and Fort Washington, MD, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Seacoast Medical Center in Little River, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, John A. Murphy. They were married for 70 years.

Born in Washington, DC in 1930, she was the daughter of Donald R. Gill, Sr. and Janet Leona Gill. She graduated from Central High School in 1948. She was employed with The Census Bureau in Suitland, MD, and retired from there in 1993, at which time she and John moved to Sunset Beach, NC to fulfill their dream of living at the beach surrounded by beautiful golf courses.

She was a member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC. She was an avid reader, loved listening to music, swimming, bowling, and spending time at the beach with family. She will be remembered for her gift of gab, and her great sense of humor. She was a wonderful golfer and had been the ladies club champion on more than one occasion while living in Maryland.

She is survived by her sister Barbara Hood of Springhill, FL; son Patrick A. Murphy (Vicki) of Mechanicsville, MD; daughters, Kathleen M. Stevenson (Andy) of LaPlata, MD, Peggy A. Barnett (John) of North Myrtle Beach, SC ,and Megan M. Murphy of Calabash, NC; grandsons, Joseph. A Murphy (Tonia Jackson) of Raleigh, NC, Troy D. Clark and Logan K. Clark of Calabash, NC; and great granddaughter, Jayci L. Murphy-Thompson. She is also survived by loving grandpups Bella, Augie, Colleen, Georgia, and Bailey and 1 great grandpup Buster. In addition to husband John, she was predeceased by her parents, her sister Virginia Lee Mehlfelt, and brother Donald R Gill, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00am on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at St. Brendan's Catholic Church, Shallotte, NC. A celebration of life will follow at the Pink Palace in Sea Trail Plantation, Sunset Beach, NC.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to your local animal shelter or rescue in Martha's name.
