Maurice Frank Dettman

Maurice Frank Dettman

On August 4, 2021, Maurice Frank Dettman, died suddenly while riding his bike; a 17-mile journey he enjoyed doing every day. Loving husband to Margaret Dettman and supportive and loving stepfather to Michelle Palmer, Jeff Palmer, Allyson Gangone and her husband Dan. Maurice, also known as Grandpa Moe, is survived by his granddaughters Tatum and Ryan Palmer, and Payton and Paige Gangone. Maurice is also survived by his brother Arch and sister-in-law, Elaine Dettman of Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, Archibald and Ellen Dettman and his beloved sister Kathryn. A man of few words but endless wit & silliness, Maurice’s white hair and dimples stole the heart of his wife Margaret Dettman 37 years ago. Together they shared a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

After more than 25 years in the furniture industry, Maurice found his true passion when he and Margie owned and operated a Yogi Bear’s Jellystone campground in VA. After selling the campground, Maurice and Margie continued working as consultants in the campground industry.

Maurice was a man of many interests and talents. His creativity seemed in endless supply as did his love of gardening, building birdhouses, metal working, and his most recent project, a water feature. Of the many astonishing accomplishments of this great man, the one he took the most pride in, was his nearly 40 years of sobriety.

To honor Maurice and his commitment to the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, the family asks that donations be made to the Stepping Stones Foundation-the foundation that fosters public understanding of alcoholism and inspires recovery by preserving the historic home, archives and legacy of Bill and Lois Wilson, cofounders of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. Memorial gifts may be directed to The Stepping Stones Foundation, P.O. Box 452, Bedford Hills, NY 10507, or https://www.steppingstones.org.
