Michael Stephen Janko, age 68, lost his battle with Bulbar ALS on September 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 16, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, Mike lived a life defined by kindness, humor, faith, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. He will be remembered for his loyalty to family and friends, his inquisitive mind, and the simple joy he found in watching the sunrise over the beach.

Mike proudly served in the Civil Air Patrol and had a lifelong passion for science, innovation, and adventure. He enjoyed rocketry, ice racing, boating, and exploring how things worked. He spent more than 30 years as an engineer with Automation Tool Company, retiring on October 17, 2025, after a distinguished career.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Janko; his children, Michael Janko II, Jennifer Janko, Krystle Wordsworth (Tim Gibbons), Dawn Wade (JJ Wade), and Amy Edwards (Rob Edwards)

He was a proud grandfather to Lydia Long, Saylor Poston, Kassie Wade, Kiersten Wade, Brayden Edwards (Carlie), Chandler Edwards, and Foster Edwards. He was also blessed with a great-grandson, Whit.

Mike is also survived by his siblings, Phil Janko (Pam), Tom Janko (Lisa), and Danny Janko (Lori) as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ilene Janko and Stephen Janko.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at Brunswick Funeral Services in Shallotte, North Carolina. 

The family will receive friends starting at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mike's greatest accomplishment was the family he loved so deeply. His legacy of kindness, loyalty, humor, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike's memory to support ALSU-NC.org or Lower Cape Fear Life Care Foundation.

The family will be hosting an additional Celebration of Life at a later date in Cookeville, Tennessee.
