Paul (Skipper) Moss Brummett, Jr.
Obituary
Paul Moss Brummett Jr, lovingly known as “Skipper,” went out with the tide July 19, 2022. Skipper is survived by his daughter Nija Brummett Jacques (husband Robert Jacques whom he lovingly thought of as “Son”) of Raleigh, NC, and son Cade Brummett (and his four-legged grandson Gnarly) of Johns Island, SC.
Skipper came into this world in 1950 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Shortly after, the small family of Christine and Paul Brummett with their newborn moved to Sunset Beach, NC.
That’s where the legend that was Skipper began.
Skipper was a very gifted athlete and individual; there really wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He excelled in every sport he played, especially football, becoming one of the most decorated athletes to ever come out of Brunswick County. Skipper’s athleticism on the football field shined so greatly that he was offered a pair of cleats by Western Carolina University where he would ultimately continue the legend that was Skipper.
While at Western Carolina he earned his first A in college; in his tennis class which he never attended. He simply made a deal with the instructor that they play a full match and if he won then the instructor had to give him an A. Keep in mind he never had picked up a tennis racket in his life. The result? He got his A!
Much like the great vast ocean Skipper so loved, this is just one of the stories of his life.
One small microcosm into his life and the way he lived, partied (anyone remember the legendary tale of him getting into a sold out Rolling Stones Concert, front row, by himself!) and loved. There just wasn’t anything he couldn’t do, a stranger he couldn’t meet or a wave he couldn’t catch.
Despite all of his successes and accomplishments on land and in the ocean, there was no accomplishment he was more proud of than that of his two children. Both whom he loved unconditionally and in his eyes they could do no wrong, especially his little blonde-haired, blue-eyed baby girl whom he would constantly refer to as “Sugar.” Skipper’s second child; his adored son whom not only fell in love with the water like his father, but clearly inherited all of his good looks and athleticism but just taller!
Skipper’s bond and love for his children will be treasured by Nija and Cade, knowing that the legacy of their dear daddy is something they will carry with them wherever the tides take them in life.
Anyone who knew Skipper knew how great of a surfer he was, expert waterman, hunter, fisherman, and all around lover of the oceans and wildlife. There wasn’t an inlet he couldn’t navigate, a boat he couldn’t drive, and a fish he couldn’t catch. More importantly, he was the proud son of two wonderful people, Paul & Christine Brummett, whom he loved and cared for limitlessly.
A private service will be held at a later date by his family. Should you be so inclined, please send memorial donations to North Carolina Sheriffs Association, www.ncsheriffs.org.
Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten and he will live on in our hearts and memories forever. Like the grandeur of the ocean, tidal ways and waterways our daddy so loved, our love for you is limitless and constant.
Rest In Paradise, Daddy!
