Funeral Services for Peggy Smith Stafford, a resident of 3586 Cormorant Circle SE, Southport, NC and a former resident of Norfolk, NY, will be held Saturday, June 30th at 2pm at the Norfolk United Methodist Church. Burial will be held Sunday, July 1st at 12:30pm in the Lakeview Cemetery, Willsboro, NY. Mrs. Stafford passed away Sunday, May 27th at Autumn Care in Shallotte, NC.

Peggy is survived by four children; Barbara (Bruce) Capron, Westernville, NY; Kathryn (Paul) Cooley, Southport, NC; Richard (Sasha) Stafford, Spencerport, NY and Carolyn (James) Kennedy, Canandaigua, NY; eight grandchildren; Matthew, Adam, Karyn, Brenda, Colleen, Vladimir, Kyle and Luis; eight step-grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Peggy is also survived by many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Peggy was pre-deceased by her husband, Raymond, in 2013. Peggy was also pre-deceased by two brothers, Edward Smith and L. Robert Smith, and one sister, Virginia Benedict.

Born in Willsboro, NY on March 20, 1931 to L. Foster and Cora Culver Smith, she was a 1949 graduate of Willsboro Central School, a 1953 graduate of Albany State University and received a master of science degree from Potsdam State University College in 1971. She was a retired teacher. Peggy was a life member and past president of the Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council. Her first scouting experience was as a Cub Scout den leader for her son. Peggy began a Senior Scout Troop and became its leader so that her daughters could continue on in Scouts which resulted in her touching many other lives. She became Raquette Valley Day Camp Director and then went on to the council level. Peggy was also very involved in the United Methodist Church, roles which included Sunday School teacher, Church School Superintendent, almost every position in the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS), which became the United Methodist Women (UMW); and participated in the Walk to Emmaus multiple times. Peggy also volunteered her time to help those effected by Hurricane Andrew. And besides all of her own activities, Peggy supported every effort that her husband was involved in, not to mention the involvement in their children and grandchildren’s lives. Oh how they are missed!
