Obituary
Rebecca ‘Becky’ Byard Whitwam, 72, of Oak Island, North Carolina passed away peacefully with her family by her side on March 24, 2026.
Born June 29, 1953, in Louisville, KY to Rodney and Nancy Byard and raised in Winston-Salem, NC, she was a graduate of RJ Reynolds High school in 1971. Becky went on to pursue a BS in Elementary Education, graduating in 1975 from East Carolina University where she met her husband Robert ‘Bob’ Whitwam. They soon settled in Kernersville, NC where they lived for 38 years raising their three children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 2025.
She taught Kindergarten through third grade at Union Cross Elementary School in Kernersville for many years before retiring in 2015 and moving to Oak Island, NC to fulfill a dream of living at the beach.
Becky is survived by her husband Robert Whitwam, three children Katie Whitwam of Kernersville, NC, Anna Knox and husband Adam of Kernersville, NC and Chris Whitwam and husband Todd Casler of Columbus, OH; two grandchildren Nora and Piper; sisters Jennifer Talley and husband Bob, of Wake Forest, NC and Amy Huneycutt and husband David, of Houston, TX.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Winston-Salem, NC.
