Robert Albert Schardt

Robert Albert Schardt

Robert A. Schardt was born on Staten Island, New York January 24, 1942, to Albert and Helen Schardt. He lived there his entire life until he and his wife, Margaret, relocated to Southport, NC several years ago.

From an early age, it was clear that Robert loved fishing, which became his lifelong passion. He attended St Peters College and graduated with a degree in organic chemistry. He then went on to work at Merck in Rahway, NJ for his entire career and more importantly, formed lifelong friendships with many special people. Those friendships, and new ones, continued to flourish after Robert’s retirement when he went full-time into his love of family, fishing, golf, and good times in Montauk, NY. He considered this the best time of his life.

Just before graduating college, he married Margaret, whom he met when they were just 17. They were married for 59 years and supported each other throughout life, raising three children: Debra, John, and Kenneth. Robert was predeceased by his son, John, a firefighter who perished Sept 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center. Robert is also survived by five grandchildren: Emma, Alaina, Robert, Christopher, and John.  He is also survived by a sister, Beverly Dyrack.

By all who knew him, Robert was considered a generous man, a good listener, and a great guy. While he will be missed, there is comfort in knowing he is now with his son.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 2:00-3:00 PM at Brunswick Funeral Service, 3479 Southport-Supply Road, Bolivia, NC and the Memorial Service will follow at 3:00 PM in the Chapel with Rev. Henry Rehder officiating.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers. https://t2t.org/
