Obituary
Robert Joe Patterson
July 31, 1946- January 23, 2026
Robert “Bob” Joe Patterson was born on July 31, 1946 in Crossnore, NC (Avery County) to Vesta Lee Biggs and Robert Lee Patterson. As a child he was called “Bobby Joe” and went to school in Conover, NC. He enjoyed playing football and drove the school bus at sixteen. As a resident of Sipe’s Orchard Home, he also worked on the dairy farm and appreciated the care and guidance of Mr. John Odom or “Pops.” He graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1966. After graduation, he volunteered for the U.S. Air Force and spent four years as a munitions specialist. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning the rank of Sergeant. To fill the down time, Bob studied Tae Kwon Do Karate and earned his black belt. He taught his family to love freedom and to be grateful for our country.
Upon his return from military service, Bob met and married his sweetheart, Violet Victoria Teague on December 20, 1969 in Longview, NC. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past December. Bob and Violet have four daughters: Deidre Elaine, Evelyn Denise, Pamela Dawn, and Denita Eileen. Bob worked hard to provide for his family. He maintained a delivery route for UPS for 10 years and, then, became an insurance agent for many years until he retired in 2011.
Bob is pre-deceased by his parents, Robert and Vesta, and three half-siblings: Gerald Greene, Lurana June Greene, and Joyce Ann Greene. Those surviving him are his lovely wife, Violet; daughter, Deidre “DeeDee,” her husband, Keith Lewis, their children Jeremy Flowers, Keith Jr., Shaniquea (Anthony Siciliano), Dametrius (Angel Chang Lewis), and Kerigan; daughter, Denise, her husband, Christopher Keller, their children Bethany (Christian Martinez), Jacob, Matthew, Christina (Steven Miller), Aaron, and Jared; daughter, honorary son, Chadwick Bolick; Dawn, her husband, Tracie Williams, their children, Rebecca La’Tara “Tara” Smith, Keiana, Treshon, Kaleb, and Winter; daughter, Denita, her husband, Joseph “Ammon” Babson, and their children, Emma, Mary Anne (Zachary Robbins), and Lydia. The great-grand children are Jake Flowers, Aria Smith, Ophelia Keller, Ella Rose Lewis, and Sariah Lewis.
Bob loved God and his family above all else. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1971 and dedicated much of his time to church service as a ward mission leader, seminary and Sunday school teacher, bishopric member, and temple worker. He enjoyed history and genealogy as well as teaching karate, fishing, watching his children and grandchildren play sports and perform music, auto repair, computer technology, gardening, and collecting/ repairing watches. He had a contagious sense of humor and knew how to lead by example. True to his mountain roots, he loved music and dancing and telling stories with his own unique flare. His life has been a blessing to all of us privileged to know and love him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 4669 Mintz St., Shallotte, NC, 28470.
