“Bob” Robert Horsefall Muirhead, 94, of Ocean Isle Beach crossed his final goal line Friday, January 11, 2019. He was born January 27, 1924 in Newton, Massachusetts and grew up in Yonkers and White Plains, New York and Alexandria, Virginia. He was drafted before graduating from high school and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Upon returning from war, he earned his degree from Erskine College, Due West, South Carolina. A career football coach, Bob coached at every level from high school to Division I from 1951 to 1988. Included are Mount Vernon High School, Annandale High School, Fork Union Military Academy, Susquehanna University, Wofford College and Virginia Military Institute. In addition to football, he coached a way of life that had a lasting influence on the lives of many young men. He and his wife, Betty P. Muirhead were married for 56 years. Bob is survived by two nieces, Carol Ellwood Sullivan and Susie Ellwood Moody and nephew, Richard Martin Ellwood, Jr. Visitation will be Friday, January 25, 2019 from 3 o’clock to 5 o’clock PM at the Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, 5229 Ocean Highway, Shallotte, NC 28470.
