Roland Jueling Schmidt
Obituary
Roland Jueling Schmidt of Calabash passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at the age of 74.
Roland was born April 1, 1943, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Sybille Louise (Jueling) and Willy Albin Schmidt. He attended school both in the United States and Munich, Germany, and was offered an apprenticeship in Bremen, Germany, learning the import/export business. He graduated in 1964 and returned to the U.S. to enter the military, later being transferred to Germany, to the 513th Intelligence Corps. After completing his military service in 1967, he began his career with Cargill Inc., in the business of purchasing and trading grain. In 1974, Roland was transferred to New York City to enter the world of commodities trading and ocean transportation. His work took him to countries around the world, visiting salt mines in Chile and christening a ship in Japan. Roland worked his entire career for Cargill, retiring as vice president, ocean transportation in 2005.
Roland married Patricia Schmidt in 1967, and soon thereafter, welcomed two girls into their home, Kirsten Marie and Dania Elise. The family settled in Westfield, N.J., and spent many years traveling, primarily to Massachusetts and abroad to Germany, Switzerland and Portugal to visit relatives. Roland and Patricia retired to Cape Cod, Mass., to be close to family and enjoy the natural beauty of the New England coast. After his wife's death in 2010, Roland moved to Calabash. He later met and married Linda ""Lindy"" Brice. They enjoyed traveling, excursions to Sunset Beach and relaxing in their home on Crow Creek Golf Course.
Roland lived a full life and was loved by many. He instilled a sense of adventure in his children through his European background and love of travel. He was an avid photographer, taking great pride in chronicling his travels and family memories through film, digital and later videography. Roland appreciated music and trained on the piano, conquering some of his favorite pieces. He enjoyed perfecting his golf game and had a competitive spirit. He was always hard-working and inspired his children to be the same. He was also a generous man, with his love and time, and touched the lives of many.
Roland is survived by his wife, Lindy Schmidt of the home; children, Kirsten (Gerry) Burke of Southlake, Texas, and Dania Schmidt of Richmond, Va.; granddaughter, Katelyn Burke; and siblings, Christoph (Babette) Schmidt of Chapel Hill and Brigitta (Heinz) Stoehr of Switzerland. He is preceded in death by first wife, Patricia.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Oct. 28, at Brunswick Funeral Service, 5229 Ocean Highway W., Shallotte.
