Obituary
Susan Jayne Hesko Hand, 76, died surrounded by family on Thursday, January 25, 2024, in Memory Care at New Haven in Little River, SC. She was born June 14, 1947, in Queens Village, NY to Edmund and Marie Pitula Hesko. Susan received her degree in Elementary Education from St. John’s University in 1969 and dedicated her life to the education of children. Her professional years were spent teaching at St. Martha’s Catholic School in Uniondale, NY and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Middletown, NY. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and helped facilitate religious activities for the children.
Susan married Dennis Hand on August 23, 1969. They retired to Ocean Isle Beach, NC sixteen years ago. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a remarkable baker and enjoyed making all sorts of holiday goodies for her family. Susan loved gathering fresh flowers, especially lilacs, but will mostly be remembered for her African violets. She was an avid reader and would take her children to the library weekly. She displayed a wonderful knack for solving puzzles and was a master of trivia. She had a unique cleverness and humor, which would always provoke laughter. Susan truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, chatting with friends and family.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents and only brother, John Hesko. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Hand; sons: Christopher (wife, Lori) Hand, Robert Hand, and Matthew (wife, Alyssa) Hand; daughter: Cathleen Hand and grandchildren: Ethan, Andrew, Burke, Lila, Dulany and Forrest.
A Memorial Mass will be held at her parish church, St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Shallotte, NC at 10:00 on Monday, February 19, 2024, with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Interment will take place at St. Francis By the Sea Catholic Church in Hilton Head, SC at a later date to be determined.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Susan Hand at alz.org/nc/donate.
