Thack Brown, Jr.
Obituary
Thack Brown Jr passed away on August 3rd, 2022. He was born on August 27th, 1933 in Woodbury, NJ the only child of Thack Sr and Esther Brown. Raised in Hagerstown, MD, he enrolled in the US Army after graduating from high school, and served at the end of the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Army, Thack returned to Maryland and fulfilled his dream of becoming the first person in his family to graduate college, earning a degree in Communications from American University.
Soon after graduation, Thack married his lifelong partner, Barbara Ann Moser, and good fortune brought the couple to Raleigh, NC in 1964. Thack went to work in economic development for the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. After helping the company relocate to Raleigh, Burroughs Wellcome Co hired him - and he would remain with the company for the rest of his career - ultimately leading their public relations department.
Throughout his life, Thack was passionate about supporting his community. He was always grateful, and somehow amazed, at the opportunities that he had in life, and wanted to do his part to help others. He was able to leverage his job in public relations to support a wide array of organizations, from the arts, to the United Way, The Boys & Girls Club and even the expansion of the Raleigh Durham Airport.
After retirement, Thack and Barbara moved to Sunset Beach North Carolina, where Thack could indulge his passion for golf, becoming a steady fixture on the Ocean Ridge Plantation golf courses. The couple quickly became active at Seaside UMC, with Thack leading multiple initiatives for the expansion of the church in addition to being an active member of the choir.
Thack loved nothing more than being together with family and friends for a good laugh over a nice meal and a glass of wine. He had a love of jazz, and an adventurous spirit that was made to travel - he would accept any excuse to get behind the wheel of a car and drive, the farther the better. He was a dedicated family man who gave unwavering support for his wife and son. Thack will be remembered by those close to him as a loyal and caring man, who touched many lives, made many friends and lived a full life.
Thack is survived by his wife Barbara, son Thack Brown III and two wonderful grandchildren, Sofia and Edward. A celebration of his life will be held at Grapevine Restaurant in Calabash, NC on Saturday, August 27th from 1 to 3 PM.
