Thelma Lee Smith, 74, of Ash, NC died Saturday, December 2, 2023.

Born in Brunswick County on April 1, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Edward Rumley “Rum” Nelson and Agnes Benton Nelson.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ernest “Monroe” Smith, son, Kevin Smith and brother, Lake Willard Nelson.

She was a faithful member of Soldier Bay Baptist Church.

Surviving is son, Ernie Smith (Jennifer) of Ash, NC; daughter, Shonda Ree Smith Ward (Tony), of Ash, NC; sister Mina Ree Nelson Sloan (Andrew); grandchildren, Makayla Ward Roberts (Ian), Curtis Monroe Ward, Caroline Hope Smith, and Benjamin Monroe Smith; great grandchild, Ryan Curtis Ward.  She leaves behind several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00AM, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Soldier Bay Baptist Church, Ash, NC officiated by Rev. Jason L. Benton and Rev. Charlie Smith.  A burial will follow in Smith Cemetery, on Longwood Road NW, Ash, NC. 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, from 6:00-8:00PM at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, NC.

Serving as pallbearers are Edward Smith, Don Smith, Michael Long, Brian Long, Ricky Smith, Timmy Smith, Jamie Willetts, and Stan Stanley.
