Thomas Lewis Bridges

Thomas Lewis Bridges, 75, affectionately known by his grandchildren as Papa Bear, Grando and Grandpa, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2021, at his home with his loving wife Bev by his side. Tom was born on October 14, 1945 in Holyoke, MA. He graduated from Holyoke High School and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Tom was a decorated veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 11 years to include a tour in Vietnam. Following his military service Tom worked as Production Manager for Raytheon Technologies for 25 years retiring in 2005 to Sunset Beach, NC.

Tom greatly enjoyed sports and coached his sons in soccer and basketball. He was a die-hard Washington Redskins and Virginia Tech Hokies fan. He was also considered a master of the grill and for years carried on the family tradition of making Streuselkuchen, a classic German crumb cake, for his family and close friends at Christmas time. Tom loved the game of golf and got his first hole-in-one at the age of 13. In retirement, he spent time volunteering for several organizations as well as coaching with the First Tee of Brunswick County. Tom never met a stranger and was very giving of his time for anyone who needed it.

Predeceasing him are his parents, Ernest and Marie (Tetlow) Bridges; uncle and aunt Lewis and Susanna (Martin) Tetlow ; uncle and aunt Andrew and Ruth (Tetlow) Gibson; uncle Thomas “Fritzi” Tetlow; and cousin Heather (Gibson) Monty.

Tom is survived by his wife of 25 years, Beverly, his children Jason Bridges (Sarah), Michael Bridges (Anne Marie); stepson Jonathan Haley; grandchildren Abigail and Olivia Bridges, Shane and Addely Bridges, Patrick and Gabriella Haley; sister Beverly Trainor (Bryan); nephew Drew Trainor (Margaret) and niece Kendra Trainor; sisters-in-law Dottie Ewing (Lee) and Linda Mountjoy; brothers-in-law Gary Mountjoy (Janet) and Rick Mountjoy (Teresa) as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Service and burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
